When I got my first degree from Salford in 1975 the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was awarded to L. S. Lowry. He sat in the row in front of me and I got to say 'Hi' to him as we left the auditorium. In those days many of his paintings were in the Peel Park Museum and Art Gallery which was between Maxwell Building and the Chemistry tower. I spent many lunchtimes enjoying his pictures or wandering around the re-creation of an old Salford street. Our chancellor was Prince Philip and so I got to shake his hand as well.
It was surprising that many students walked past the Peel Art Gallery daily and didn't realise there was a re-creation of an old street in there as well as the paintings of Lowry. I did take a few people there and took pleasure in finding strange and interesting things to do to try and impress girls. Anyone remember being impressed? No, I thought not!
